Job Overview

This is an exciting opportunity to join our academic team in Kuwait at a time of ambitious growth for the British Council across adult, young learner and corporate English programmes in the Gulf region and specifically Kuwait. Kuwait is a bustling location that provides an excellent standard of living and has always appealed to international teachers. 


This teaching position will most likely be as part of a team operating from a new location with modern, well-equipped classrooms. Teachers are expected to work across all products and age groups and may be asked to work across our centres in Kuwait City when operational needs arise. British Council Kuwait offers English language tuition to adults and young learners and is the largest YL teaching centre in the Gulf, providing you with great opportunities to develop your YL teaching to all our age groups.  


Role Purpose

  • To maintain and enhance professional development and academic quality in the teaching centre, through the management of an in-house teacher development programme and support 
  • To promote and ensure quality teaching and effective learning of English 
  • To provide learners with a rewarding and stimulating English language learning experience 
  • To support the wider aims of the British Council and its cultural relations mission 


Accountabilities

  • Planning, preparing, and delivering high-quality English language teaching that meets the needs of different customer groups taking into account individual learning styles.
  • Monitoring progress and providing regular feedback to help manage students’ performance throughout the course, and actively promote learner autonomy.
  • Ensuring teaching meets the standards expected in Teaching and Learning Reviews, the annual Academic Quality Plans, and organisational expectations.
  • Actively engaging in professional development and performance management to ensure quality and high standards in teaching and learning and maintain the British Council’s position at the forefront of best ELT practices.
  • Ensuring safeguarding and other guidelines are applied and upheld in line with standards and policy for the following areas:
  • Child protection
  • Equality, diversity, and inclusion
  • Health and Safety

  • Ability to work in a way that promotes the safety and well-being of children
  • Effective communication and engagement with children and their families
  • Knowledge and understanding of child development and its impact on learning and behaviour

Salary & Benefits 

  • Salary: 840 - 950 KWD/Month (Depending on qualification and experience)
  • Annual Leaves: 35 days annual leave plus 14 public holidays per year
  • Housing Allowance: 150 KWD per month
  • Contract hours: 37.5, not inc. breaks
  • Teaching Hours : 25 per week
  • Relocation Allowance (Recruited from outside Kuwait): Employees will receive the settling-in allowance as a one-off net payment upon arrival, to the host location. The allowance is 7% of the employee’s annual base salary if single and for accompanied 10% of base salary.


Additional Information

  • Start Date: Tentatively Jan 2024 (Depending on visa and PAS process)
  • Work Schedule: The teaching centre is currently open 6 days a week Friday to Wednesday. Normal working patterns are Friday to Tuesday or Saturday to Wednesday. 
  • Right to work in the country - At present, due to Kuwaiti legal restrictions, we are unable to employ:
  • Currently, DEPENDENT/FAMILY VISAS ARE BLOCKED for all nationalities residing in Kuwait, there is currently no clarity on when this block will be lifted.
  • The work permit is restricted for Egyptian and Filipino passport holders
  • Applicants over the age of 60 years will NOT be considered due to visa restrictions in Kuwait
  • Currently, these are the nationalities we know of that are restricted entry into Kuwait- Afghanistan, Sudan, Pakistan, Iraq, Somalia, Libya, Iran, Syria, and Yemen.
  • Unmarried men/women with accompanying children
  • Unmarried men/women with an accompanying partner
  • Local legislation does not allow female staff to sponsor their husbands

Qualification

Essentials

  • Cambridge CELTA/Trinity Cert TESOL or equivalent
  • Undergraduate/University degree 


Desirables

  • Cambridge DELTA/Trinity Diploma or equivalent
  • PGCE/B.Ed. in Primary or relevant subject
  • TYLEC or CELTYL
  • MA (TESOL or another related subject)


Work Experience

Essentials 

  • Equivalent to around 2 years post-certificate i.e. CELTA/Trinity cert TESOL
  • Experience in teaching relevant age groups 
  • Primary aged 6 to 10 (200+ hours)
  • Lower Secondary aged 11 to 14 (400+ hours)
  • Upper Secondary aged 15 to 17 (200+ hours)
  • Adults General English 18+ (400+ hours)


Desirables

  • Experience teaching MyClass, IELTS, Early Years, Primary + and Secondary +
  • Previous work history with the British Council
  • Experience teaching in a classroom environment similar to the British Council
